Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay Technology for the First Time.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Video review systems will be launched at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes are granted the right to question certain calls from the chair umpire, following the system already in operation at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development arrives only a year after the AELTC implemented ELC, which terminated the longstanding role of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to review other situations, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance end of a point.

Notably, there is no limit on the number of challenges a player can initiate.

Case in Point

An illustrative example took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

This technology are not new for Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have the system implemented at all of its events.

Other Changes

Another change at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have occasionally been unsure if a ball was out or in.

In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
