Ultra-Conservative Former Congressman J.A. Kast Voted In as Chile's New Leader.

Following a conclusive runoff election, far-right figure José Antonio Kast has clinched the presidency in Chile.

A Commanding Win

After over 99% of votes tallied, Kast won 58.17% of the vote, defeating leftist contender Jeannette Jara, who obtained 41.83%.

This marks Kast's third presidency, having earlier been lost by the sitting president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 second round.

Platform Centered On Law and Order and Migration

Recognized for his strong socially conservative views and praise for the period of former leader Augusto Pinochet, Kast's campaign was mostly built on promises to tackle rising insecurity and radically restrict immigration.

He consistently blamed migrants, notably the roughly 330,000 undocumented individuals in Chile, for security issues. During the election cycle, he gave an stern warning for them to depart before the new term begins or face deportation.

His proposals featured controversial measures such as building detention centers, barriers, perimeter fencing, and increasing the armed forces presence on the northernmost border.

Amid a Regional Wave

Many commentators view Kast's success as aligning with a larger right-wing wave in South America, similar to recent political wins in nations like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.

Nevertheless, other analysts further frame it as a continuation of the established alternation of power between left and right-wing governments since Chile's transition to democracy in 1990.

Governing Without a Clear Mandate

In spite of his decisive electoral win, Kast will not command an clear majority in parliament, neither in the Chamber of Deputies or the Senate, even if all rightwing parties are combined together.

This legislative landscape could hinder his policy goals, such as a pledge to slash public spending by a significant sum within a year and a half—a proposal for which he has not detailed specifics.

"There are numerous things about what a Kast administration will be that are uncertain because he has not said his methods for implement them," commented a political science professor.

The expert continued, "On fiscal matters, it is almost certain we will see adjustment measures common for the right. But the area with much less ambiguity is on public safety, because that has been his central theme throughout the campaign."
