Trump's Progressive Alarm Overlooks The Continent's Real Danger: Economic Decline.

The recent US national security strategy presents a flawed assessment of Europe. The document asserts that open-border policies and what it terms "woke" policies pose an grave threat to the continent's identity. Yet, this perspective is based on a fundamental misinterpretation of the situation. The actual challenge confronting the EU is not cultural but economic and technological backwardness.

The Stark Growth Divide Separating the US and Europe

The data reveal a stark contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output grew by 87%, compared to a mere thirteen and a half percent growth for the European Union. Over this period, European income per person dropped from over three-quarters to just half of the US level. Remarkably, even Mississippi now has a greater average income than major EU nations like France and Italy.

Currently, roughly 50% of the global 50 largest technology firms are American, while only four are from Europe.

The Innovation Shortfall: A Critical Problem

This widening disparity stems from stronger efficiency gains in the US, largely due to technological innovation and better use of resources. The scene of world technology leadership is decidedly American. In the last fifty years, 241 US firms have grown into enterprises valued at more than ten billion dollars, compared with just 14 in the European continent.

This gap raises a vital question: In the race for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, where does the EU stand? Experts widely concede it is largely a contest between two involving the United States and China, with Europe entering at a significant disadvantage.

Root Causes of Europe's Innovation Gap

A number of key reasons account for this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a far deeper and more dynamic network for funding startups. Europe has yet to establish a true capital markets union, which caps the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided rules hamper European business. A American entrepreneur can launch a product under one set of laws to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a larger population, is divided among 27 different national systems, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on risk-taking differ sharply. In parts of Europe, business failure was historically met with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's long-term lack of spending in military capabilities has eroded its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Hopefulness

Despite these hurdles, one can find causes for optimism. Policymakers are growing more conscious of the existential challenge and have begun to advance serious reform. Key reports on EU competitiveness and the internal market highlight the need for sweeping changes.

With the right policies and rule changes, these assets might enable far greater levels of commercial innovation.

The continent retains significant advantages: high-quality human capital, top-tier education systems, and premier labs. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these foundations have the potential to unleash a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if Europe does not take the lead in developing cutting-edge technologies, it can still significantly increase productivity by adopting and adapting innovations from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now faces a critical crossroads. As the saying goes, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, Europe's slide in innovation has been gradual. However, without decisive action to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could give way to a rapid and permanent loss of world influence.
