Three Lions Coach Explains The Philosophy: For England, the Jersey Must Be a Cape, Not Protective Gear.
In the past, the England assistant coach featured for Accrington Stanley. Today, he is focused on helping Thomas Tuchel secure World Cup glory next summer. The road from athlete to trainer began as an unpaid coach with the youth team. He remembers, “It was in the evenings, third of a pitch, asked to do 11 v 11 … flat balls, not enough bibs,” and he fell in love with it. He had found his calling.
Rapid Rise
His advancement has been remarkable. Commencing with his first major job, he developed a standing with creative training and excellent people skills. His stints with teams led him to Chelsea and Bayern Munich, plus he took on roles with national teams across multiple countries. His players include legends including world-class talents. Currently, in the England setup, he's fully immersed, the top in his words.
“All begins with a vision … However, I hold that dedication shifts obstacles. You envision the goal then you break it down: ‘What's the process, gradually?’ We dream about winning the World Cup. But dreams won’t get it done. We have to build a methodical process that allows us for optimal success.”
Detail-Oriented Approach
Obsession, especially with the smallest details, is central to his philosophy. Working every hour under the sun—sometimes the moon, too, the coaching duo test boundaries. The approach feature mental assessments, a strategy for high temperatures for the finals abroad, and fostering teamwork. He stresses the England collective and dislikes phrases like “international break”.
“You’re not coming here for a holiday or a pause,” Barry notes. “It was vital to establish a setup that attracts the squad and they're pushed that going back is a relief.”
Driven Leaders
The assistant coach says and the head coach as “very greedy”. “We want to dominate all parts of the match,” Barry affirms. “We strive to own the whole ground and we dedicate many of our days on. Our responsibility not only to stay ahead with developments but to beat them and set new standards. This is continuous to have this problem/solution-finding mentality. And to simplify complexity.
“We get 50 days together with the team prior to the World Cup. We need to execute an intricate approach that gives us a tactical advantage and we have to make it so clear during that time. It’s to take it from thought to data to know-how to performance.
“To develop a process enabling productivity during the limited time, it's crucial to employ all the time available since we took the job. In the time we don’t have the players, it's vital to develop bonds with them. We must dedicate moments in calls with players, observing them live, understand them, connect with them. If we just use the 50 days, it's impossible.”
Final Qualifiers
He is getting ready on the last two in the qualifying campaign – facing Serbia at home and away to Albania. The team has secured qualification after six consecutive victories without conceding a goal. Yet, no let-up is planned; quite the opposite. Now is the moment to reinforce the team’s identity, to maintain progress.
“We are both certain that our playing approach should represent the best aspects of English football,” he comments. “The fitness, the flexibility, the robustness, the honesty. The Three Lions kit should be harder than ever to get but light to wear. It should feel like a cape and not body armour.
“To make it light, we have to give them a system that lets them to operate similar to weekly matches, that feels natural and allows them to take the handbrake off. They must be stuck less in thinking and more in doing.
“You can gain psychological edges you can get as a coach at both ends of the pitch – building from the defense, attacking high up. But in the middle area of the pitch, those 24 metres, we believe play has stagnated, particularly in the Premier League. Coaches have extensive data currently. They know how to set up – defensive shapes. Our aim is to speed up play in that central area.”
Drive for Growth
His desire to get better is relentless. When he studied for his pro license, he felt anxious over the speaking requirement, especially as his class featured big names like Lampard and Carrick. So, to build his skill set, he sought out tough situations imaginable to practise giving them. Such as Walton jail in Liverpool, where he also took inmates for a training session.
He completed the course with top honors, with his thesis – focusing on set-pieces, where he studied numerous set-plays – got into print. Lampard was among those convinced and he brought Barry as part of his backroom with the Blues. When Frank was fired, it was telling that the club got rid of nearly all assistants except Barry.
His replacement at Stamford Bridge took over, and shortly after, they claimed the Champions League. After Tuchel's exit, Barry remained in the setup. However, when Tuchel returned with Bayern, he got Barry out from Chelsea and back alongside him. The FA see them as a double act like previous management pairs.
