This Swine Life: Pig Named Six Seven Granted Clemency by Miami-Dade Leader.
Although not quite at the same level as granting clemency to holiday birds, but the county's top official conducted a ceremonial pardon event this week by ritually sparing the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“The swine has done no wrong. She deserves this act of mercy. She has committed zero crimes,” stated the mayor in a speech with obvious nods to the extraordinary and sizable number of executive clemencies issued from the start of the onset of a current administration.
“Unless you count eating half a dozen apples per day,” the mayor added. “I hope she experiences a lengthy and joyful existence away from worry.”
This ceremony, which both honors and questions the area's customary feast of eating roast pork during the holidays, was established to mirror the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.
The pig, contributed by a first responder, was named for the popular vernacular phrase of young people shouting “6-7” – deriving from a hip-hop line – often for no discernable reason. The phrase became so pervasive that a prominent word reference recently named “6-7” its top term for the year.
A New Life
Six Seven the pig is now scheduled to spend its days at a rural sanctuary “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the ceremony's official statement.
“The annual pig pardon has become a beloved tradition to kick off the festive period,” said the event host, in a notably cheerful message.
“It embodies the essence of Miami: happy, varied, and rooted in traditions that unite the community. Each year, we are delighted to mark heritage and mercy in a way distinctively Miamian.”
Attendees enjoyed a meat-free selection of spinach fritters and Cuban coffee as they marked the swine's new lease on life.
