The Dominik Diamond Personal Game of the Year List for The Past Year
Well, how did you experience this year in your family? Was it all as good as you pretended on online? Overflowing with academic success for the kids and elaborate themed fancy dress gatherings for the adults? Or perhaps it was a swamp of letdowns with only occasional fun moments? Is any of this authentic, or have we all become seven-fingered virtual entities with celebrity dental work?
I've corralled everyone for a reflection, willing or unwilling, to debate the most important thing in a calendar year: which video games we played the most. Without further ado:
Game Oldest Daughter Played the Most
Pikmin
"Is it impossible to pick just one?"
"This isn't my personal ranking."
Meanwhile, on mobile, she’s been playing Cityscapes and "searching for decent healthcare."
"In the game?"
"In real life."
Release Middle Son Played the Most
Overwatch
"I don’t play games on my phone." He took umbrage that I suggested it. I respect that.
Game Youngest Daughter Played the Most
Resident Evil Biohazard
Her goal is to get into drama school, but when she stepped away from the mic, she was immersed in Resident Evil. She also elaborated in great detail about her achievements on The Sims, where the Shark has a thriving utopia with infinitely better healthcare than her older sibling has outside the game.
Release the Wife Played the Most
Crash Bandicoot: It’s About Time
She began the year at 60% completion and finished the year at 82%. It’s a marathon not a sprint for her. Her mobile diversion: something called Woodle, where you have to extract pins.
Game I Laughed at My Kids for Still Playing
Minecraft
Whenever I see my adult son playing Minecraft, I set about him like a cross between a classic comedy bit. When he protests, I reply that I am engaging in this to prepare him so he can be a man and play games for grownups. It's a classic Scottish father/son relationship.
Most Notable Gaming Family Member of the Year
Eldest Daughter on Just Dance 2024
It wasn't even close for this one. She is a machine. Even better than I was at classic rhythm games in my prime.
Title I Played the Most
Marvel Snap
No other game compared to the hours I spent on this insanely well-crafted deck building competitive game, with its ever-changing range of cards and game variations.
Title I Wish I Had Played Less
Marvel Snap
The catch about games that frequently update their range is you wake up one day and see it is all just an attempt to lure you into fomo-fuelled microtransactions. So affection became resentment halfway through the year and it was deleted.
Title I Wish I Had Played More
Doom: The Dark Ages
Glorious reinvention of a legendary franchise. Immersive atmosphere from the beginning. I wish I could dispatch my demons so effectively in real life.
Title I Wish I Had Played More (Thoughtful Edition)
Blue Prince
I decline to rush this beautiful, unique game and I just was short on the mental bandwidth to give it what it deserved earlier this year. With family visits over the festive period, I will be playing this in the early morning after evening drinks.
Title That Saved My Soul When I Needed It
Balatro
I know Balatro was 2024’s surprise hit, but I was slow on the uptake. And it is exceptional. It just gets every single thing right. Crazy Poker is a wonderful concept, but the powers behind the different wild cards are so imaginative it has become a game I would happily play any time. Combine that with the charm of the card design, and this is an true pinnacle of gaming. I dream of being stuck in a small space for hours just so I have nothing to do but play it.
Title I Got the Most Criticism For Criticising
Outer Worlds 2
I endured a wave of criticism when I wrote about how a glitch in another game ruined the experience for me, but that other title is still a colossal gaming achievement in terms of overall polish – which I appreciated even more after playing Outer Worlds 2. So thank you to the commenter who took the time to contact me to say that my Outer Worlds 2 review was "poorly reasoned". I mention that as written, because I respect the passion, and she is obviously an sharp judge of character.
Title Everybody Loved That I Just Didn’t Get
Hollow Knight: Silksong
Alright. Give me a brutally difficult exploration-focused thing and don’t tell me guidance on what I am supposed to be doing, except "look around". How delightful. I get that it is beautiful and is ideal if you are into the genre, but I cannot think of a gaming experience I want less of in my current stage of life. I was around back when most games were like this, and my patience is gone. It was okay when I was a kid, but so was many outdated things.
Biggest Gaming News of 2025
Close call between business deals that sparked debate, and expensive game releases. Both ethically dubious and concerning.
Games I Would Name My Children After, If I Was Ever Crazy Enough to Have More
Clair Obscur, Despelote and Bananza would all sound good names shouted from the garden at bedtime.
Part of My Body That Aches Most From Gaming
Right Thumb Joint. Honestly. I don’t know if it’s because of button mashing or endless scrolling, but it burns like the mines of sulphur in the mornings now. I knew I should have got my thumbs protected back in the past.
Game I Am Looking Forward to the Most in 2026
Grand Theft Auto VI.
And it will come out in 2026, even if we have to stretch time until the end of days.
Game I Am Looking Forward to the Most in 2036
The Witcher 4.
