Senegal's Rising Star Lamine Camara: From Dreams to Afcon Favourites.
As I enter the space, Lamine Camara grabs a soccer ball he clings to until after the conversation. This serves as a powerful visual metaphor for a ambition he has always held onto. “I only wanted football; my mind was set on nothing else,” remarks this Monaco and Senegal midfielder.
His determination and raw talent convinced teams such as Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. Yet, the hardest approval to secure was not a sporting director or coach, but his own father. “He didn’t want me playing soccer but it’s because he had never watched me,” explains Camara.
Overcoming Early Hurdles
In time, on “one beautiful day,” he received his father’s blessing to pursue his path in the sport. Another challenge was his small stature, which deterred his hometown team Casa Sports from offering him a contract.
Nevertheless, Génération Foot – the institution that produced stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – were convinced immediately. After he earned the MVP in a local competition, the scouts were “shocked” to learn he was without a contract. They moved fast. “They took me directly to the academy. They prevented me from returning to Casamance,” he recalled.
An Unforgettable Year and European Arrival
That decision put him on a trajectory to Europe. His breakthrough was 2023, “an unforgettable year,” which began with Camara winning the CHAN trophy. Just weeks later, though tired, he competed in the U-20 Africa Cup, leading his country to victory and being named best player.
Soon after, he was unveiled as Metz, emulating Mané. “Settling in wasn't a problem,” says the youngster. He has lived alone in Europe, a choice his relatives encourage to keep him focused.
Influences and On-Field Identity
Distractions aren't a problem for Camara, who draws inspiration from the Belgian maestro's “modesty” and exceptional playing qualities. He is also a huge fan of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.
His powerful shot and accuracy from dead-ball situations are notable assets. He admits a need to control his competitive fire, having been sent off early in his spells at both Metz and Monaco. “It's a trait that is following me!” he jokes.
Life at Monaco, Teammates and Upcoming Ambitions
At Monaco, he values the guidance of teammates like Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “As soon as I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I thought we are really lucky,” he said.
Currently, his focus is squarely on the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal. “We are the team to beat – we can’t hide from that. After defeating England in their own country…,” he states, referencing a memorable 3-1 victory in Nottingham.
Regarding a transfer to the English top flight, he remains committed to Monaco at present. “I feel really at ease here,” he insists. He is frequently ribbed by icon El-Hadji Diouf about his two Best Young Player awards. Camara jokes, yet remains determined about winning the main Africa Player of the Year down the line.
“The pressure is on us – that's the reality. Having beaten England at Wembley… it gives you belief.”
Moving forward, this talented midfielder combines humble beginnings, steely determination, and grand ambitions targeting to lead Senegal to continental glory and forge his own lasting legacy in the game.
