Patients Discontinuing Weight-Loss Injections Gain Back Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

New research suggests that people who come off popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end conventional lifestyle programs.

Research printed in a leading health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Individuals purchasing such drugs must be informed of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery suggests a return to original mass in about a year and a half.

Analyzing Therapies

The research, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Scientists emphasize that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically have a more gradual weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Explaining the Quick Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the way of the injections accounts for the amplified regain.

The injections copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."

A Chronic Issue?

The NHS advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts argue that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the treatment is often life-long.

This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "highlight the long-term nature of obesity," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Testimonies

People who have stopped the medication describe a powerful resurgence of appetite.

"I experienced a switch flipping and you're instantly ravenous," recalled a patient.

The struggle is worsened if individuals have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Widespread Interest

Survey data suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.

  • Adoption is higher among females compared to males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success hinges on combined behavioural support.
