Israeli citizens observe two-year anniversary of October 7th attacks as Gaza peace talks proceed
Israelis have come together around the country to mark two years since the Hamas-initiated attack on that fateful day in October 2023, as discussions advanced in Egypt over a resolution to the war in Gaza.
The attack led to more than 1,200 people killed and 251 others abducted back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the most most fatal day for the Jewish community since the World War II.
Israel reacted by launching a defensive operation in Gaza which has taken over 67,000 people, based on figures from the region's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its figures are regarded as reliable by the UN and other world agencies.
"Our bloodthirsty adversaries have caused great damage, but they have not overcome us," Benjamin Netanyahu remarked on Tuesday.
He also promised to "accomplish all the goals of the war: the release of all the captured, the destruction of the Hamas government and the guarantee that Gaza will no longer present a threat to Israel".
Memorial Ceremonies Across Israel
The national leadership delayed state memorials until October 16th - after the conclusion of the religious holiday season - but events still occurred across the country on Tuesday.
A commemorative event for the loved ones of Israeli citizens who lost their lives in the Hamas attack was conducted in the coastal city. Put together by the affected families, it was televised on Israeli broadcast stations.
Some time earlier, a silent tribute was observed throughout the country.
Negotiation Meetings in Egypt
Simultaneously, Israeli and Hamas representatives gathered in the North African tourist destination of the Egyptian city for a continuing round of mediated discussions to discuss the conditions of the plan.
A high-ranking delegate involved in the negotiations revealed that an late session of mediated discussions commenced at 19:00 Cairo time.
The source said the morning session ended without significant progress, amid disagreements over the suggested Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over assurances Hamas seeks to make certain Israel does not restart fighting after the initial stage of the arrangement.
He noted that the negotiations are "difficult and have not yet achieve any significant progress," but mentioned that mediators are striving to reduce the gaps between the both parties.
Key Matters in Negotiations
- An enduring truce
- The swap of the captives still kept by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
- The pullout of troops from Gaza
- Plans for humanitarian aid distribution
- Future administration of the region
Public Feeling
In Tel Aviv's public square previously, young a woman - whose family member survived the attack on the outdoor event, where hundreds were killed and dozens more were taken hostage by Hamas militants - told: "No location feels like home now and until each abducted person come back not a single person will feel safe."
"After we see everybody home again, we can feel relief anew. Then we can start to recover," she continued.
In front of the leader's official dwelling in the capital, people congregated to show their backing for the families of the captives. Israel states 48 remain in confinement in Gaza, twenty of whom are believed to be surviving.
Protester a participant explained: "We must do whatever arrangement needed for the abducted to be released. But we sincerely need guarantees that we will be protected."
Opinion polls now consistently show that about the majority of the population desire the hostilities to conclude in return for the release of the captives.
Palestinian Circumstances
At the site of Nova festival, those paying respects gathered to remember the victims.
From the site, the noise of aerial bombardments and explosions could be heard just a short distance away in Gaza, where local people reported the intense Israeli shelling carried on.
In the urban center, attacks were noted in the dawn of that day in the west side Tal al-Hawa, sector and Nasr districts and in the east side district of that sector, as well the settlement to the northwestern area.
"Once the night falls, the dread appears with it," evacuated urban resident a mother, whose teenage son was died by an Israeli aerial attack earlier, shared.
"My family are terrified of the attacks. Throughout the evening we are resting together, embracing, notably my youngest child who places his head on me the entire evening."
"Continuously we check the updates to see what happened. And I'm worried that this truce will not be achieved and that the fighting will resume to us."
